PM Modi launches Jal Shakti Abhiyan
To save water and mark World Water Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday launched Jal Shakti Abhiyan – ‘Catch the Rain Campaign’ through video conferencing. World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 each year.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan will be implemented across the county in rural and urban areas from March 22 to November 30 during the pre-monsoon and monsoon period. The theme is ‘Catch the rain as and when it falls.’
The campaign aims to strengthen water conservation by saving or harvesting rainwater with the cooperation of the public.
The campaign encourages all stakeholders to build rainwater harvesting structures across the country to store the rainwater.
In addition to that, Gram Sabhas in rural areas gather to discuss water-related issues, solutions to them and water conservation methods. They will also take an oath to conserve water. However, Gram Sabahs in poll-bound states will be excluded from this.
An MoU has been signed by the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to implement the Ken Betwa Link Project.
It is the first such project of the national perspective plan to interlink rivers to avoid water wastage.
It is the vision of former and later Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The project aimed to carry water from surplus areas to water-deficit areas by way of interlinking of rivers.
The Ken Betwa Link Project intends to transfer water from the Ken to the Betwa River through the construction of the Daudhan Dam. It also involves other ways of water flow between the two rivers through a canal, the Lower Orr Project etc.
The project is likely to benefit drought-prone areas in Bundelkhand like Panna, Damoh, Tikamgarh, Datia, Chhatarpur, Vidisha etc. The project will be a model for such projects across the county.
