The central government initiated several schemes under Pradhan Mantri Yojana. UDAN yojana is one such scheme.

UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) is a first-of-its-kind scheme which is intended to boost the airline connectivity with low-cost flights throughout the country.

The scheme was declared by the Civil Aviation Ministry in October 2016.

Today, this prestigious UDAN scheme is going to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Yesterday, the PMO stated that Prime Minister will inaugurate the scheme from Shimla.

Air travelers can buy their tickets for ₹2,500 in a flight. A single user can book up from 9 seats to 40 seats under this Yojana.

The price mentioned is not applicable to entire seats in that flight. Only 50 per cent can be bought for the prescribed price and the remaining seats are available for market price.

₹2,500 is the ceiling price under UDAN scheme. No additional charges are levied on this.

This is due to concessions given by the government to reduce operation costs by way of reducing excise on value-added tax (VAT), service tax etc.

The scheme is applicable to the routes of one hour journey of nearly 500 kilometers distance. There are 32 routes for which this scheme is available. The tickets are sold on first come first serve basis. That means, the first half of the passengers can get their tickets at cheap prices while the remaining half will get their tickets at expensive prices.

For instance the bookings of Air India flight from Shimla to Delhi will start at ₹2,036. This is all inclusive price. This price is available for first half of the seats under UDAN scheme. The remaining half of the seats will start at a fare of ₹13,000 to ₹19,000 for one way journey.

PMO states that the main motive behind this scheme is to improve the airline connectivity to important areas. This scheme will also help common man travel in flights without any burden due to simple fares, says the government.
