In 2017, there are many events that took place in India. Here are some important events in the year 2017.

  • New President of India has been elected for India after July 24 after the completion of the former President Pranab Mukherjee. Ram Nath Kovind is the new President of the country. Similarly, new Vice President has been elected. Venkaiah Naidu took oath as 13th Vice President of India.
  • The Supreme Court of India in a landmark judgement held that candidates who contest in elections may be disqualified to contest in the elections if they are found following corrupt practices. What more, the Apex Court states that appeal for votes based on religion, caste, community, race or language will also fall under ‘corrupt practice’.
  • Another big event in India in 2017 is the merging of 92-year-old Railway Budget in the Union Budget.
  • One of the biggest milestones of the country in this year is the launching of PSLV-C37 rocket by ISRO. A record 104 satellites from seven countries had been put into orbit by this satellite. ISRO also succeeded in putting 31 satellites through PSLV C-38; out of them, 29 satellites are from other countries.
  • The oldest serving aircraft carrier INS Viraat of Indian Navy has been decommissioned after 30 years of its service.
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST), was introduced in India. One of the biggest tax reforms of the country in 70 years of independence came into force from the midnight of 30 June 2017.
  • Supreme Court banned instant triple talaq system stating that it is unconstitutional. The central government has been instructed to pass law in parliament on this issue.
  • By withdrawing their armies from the region, both India China agreed to end border standoff in Doklam.
  • Elections were held in seven states this year.
  • Global Entrepreneurship Summit was held in Hyderabad for which Ivanka Trump was invited as the chief guest.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Hyderabad Metro.
