Delhi’s underground link could redefine NCR airport travel

Major infrastructure projects often reshape how cities connect, and a new tunnel proposal could significantly improve mobility across the National Capital Region.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India have begun preliminary studies for an underground corridor linking key transport hubs in Delhi and NCR.

The proposed tunnel aims to ease congestion on busy roads while cutting travel time between Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and the upcoming Noida International Airport.

Authorities have planned the project in two stages. First, experts will examine the feasibility of a tunnel stretching from Talkatora Stadium to Gurugram through the IGI Airport corridor.

Subsequently, the second phase will assess an extension from Talkatora to Sarai Kale Khan.

This route would connect with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and provide seamless access to Noida International Airport through the Chandawali-Jewar road.

The proposed network could create a faster and more efficient travel option for commuters. Moreover, it would strengthen connectivity between major business districts, residential areas, and airport infrastructure.

Officials also intend to incorporate multiple entry and exit points along the alignment. One of the key access points is expected near Talkatora Stadium.

As a result, residents from several central and west Delhi localities could benefit from easier travel. Areas such as Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar, Rajendra Place, and Connaught Place may gain direct access to the underground corridor.

Consequently, daily commuters could experience reduced traffic delays and smoother movement across the city.

At present, the proposal remains at an early stage. Initial studies will determine the most suitable route and alignment.

Thereafter, authorities will prepare a detailed project report outlining estimated costs, technical requirements, construction challenges, and implementation timelines. The report will also provide clarity on future expansion plans.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra confirmed that studies for the first phase have already commenced.

Meanwhile, preparations for evaluating the second phase are expected to follow. If the project advances as planned, it could emerge as a transformative transport link connecting Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram through a high-speed underground network.
