Delhi commuters face delays as NDLS redevelopment slows traffic
Urban infrastructure upgrades often create temporary challenges, and central Delhi is currently witnessing this impact around New Delhi Railway Station.
Ongoing redevelopment work at the station has begun to strain traffic movement, and commuters should prepare for significant delays throughout December.
Traffic police have issued an advisory because construction activities have reduced road space on Chelmsford Road.
The stretch near Gate No. 1, which connects the station to Paharganj, remains especially congested.
As the work continues, congestion is likely to intensify between December 10 and December 31.
Moreover, the restricted space has already created delays for vehicles approaching the station from busy commercial zones.
Authorities have urged commuters to use the Ajmeri Gate side for smoother access. This entry point currently offers relatively better movement.
However, they still advise travellers to avoid unnecessary trips around the Paharganj side because construction work often blocks or narrows the available lanes.
The disruption does not end there. Reduced capacity on Chelmsford Road is also affecting nearby routes such as Minto Road, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, and Desh Bandhu Gupta Road.
Consequently, traffic police have increased their presence across these stretches to manage heavy flow and prevent major bottlenecks.
Even so, authorities expect more crowding on the Ajmeri Gate side as passengers shift their routes. They have warned drivers to avoid improper parking, as it can worsen the situation.
The redevelopment project, managed by the Rail Land Development Authority, aims to modernise the New Delhi Railway Station.
The upgrade, which costs about ₹4,700 crore, includes two execution phases and the construction of seven new flyovers.
These improvements promise long-term gains, although they currently contribute to the area’s congestion.
For now, commuters should follow all traffic advisories and plan their travel with extra caution.
Although the inconvenience may continue for a few weeks, the project is expected to deliver improved connectivity and better facilities once completed.
