15 railway stations set for private redevelopment

India is moving ahead with a major railway modernisation drive, with 15 stations selected for redevelopment under the Public-Private Partnership model.

The initiative aims to upgrade infrastructure, enhance passenger amenities and create more efficient travel hubs.

Several prominent stations across major cities are included in the ambitious redevelopment plan.

Three prominent stations in Delhi feature on the list: Old Delhi Railway Station, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Anand Vihar Terminal.

The redevelopment aims to modernise station infrastructure while improving facilities and convenience for passengers.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the details in a written reply to a question raised by Rajya Sabha member Dilip Kumar Ray.

He said the Railway Ministry has examined different approaches for upgrading and modernising stations, including partnerships with private players.

The PPP model has already been used for the redevelopment of Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh.

The project is being cited as an example of how private participation can support station modernisation.

Meanwhile, Vijayawada Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh has also received approval for redevelopment under the PPP framework.

The proposal was cleared by the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC). However, an earlier tender attracted no bids. Consequently, fresh tenders will now be invited.

The 15 stations identified for redevelopment are spread across several major cities. Besides the three Delhi stations, the list includes Vijayawada, Coimbatore Junction, KSR Bengaluru, Chennai Central, Andheri, Avadi, Tambaram, Bhopal, Vadodara, Kalyan, Dadar and Pune.

The proposed projects are expected to focus on better passenger amenities and upgraded station facilities.

Moreover, the involvement of private players could bring new approaches to station design, infrastructure and service delivery.

The redevelopment programme marks a significant step towards transforming India’s railway network.

By upgrading major stations, the initiative aims to improve infrastructure, enhance passenger amenities and create more modern, efficient and convenient travel hubs for millions of railway users across the country.
