Information on Indian Railways auto-upgrade
Over the past 11 years, Indian Railways has undergone a significant transformation under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
With a strong focus on enhancing passenger convenience, safety, and modernising infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has introduced numerous initiatives aimed at making train travel more efficient, comfortable, and hassle-free for millions of passengers across the country.
One of the lesser-known but highly beneficial features introduced is the IRCTC auto-upgrade facility, which many passengers are still unaware of.
This innovative system allows passengers to receive a free automatic upgrade to a higher class if there are vacant seats available after the final chart preparation, all without any additional cost.
Key Highlights of the Auto-Upgrade Policy:
- Completely free of cost: Passengers do not have to pay any extra fare for the upgrade.
- Based on seat availability: The upgrade applies only if seats in a higher class remain vacant after charting.
- Upgrade limit: The maximum upgrade allowed is up to two classes higher (for example, from Sleeper Class to 3AC, or from 2S to 2AC).
- PNR remains unchanged: Passengers’ PNRs stay the same, ensuring smooth travel without any confusion.
- Optional feature: The auto-upgrade happens only if the “Auto-upgrade” option is selected at the time of booking.
How to Avail the Auto-Upgrade:
- Log in to the IRCTC website or app and select your preferred train and class.
- Enter the passenger details such as name, age, and gender.
- Make sure to tick the “Auto-upgrade” checkbox during the booking process.
- Proceed to make the payment and confirm your ticket.
This auto-upgrade facility ensures better utilisation of available berths and offers an enhanced travel experience, especially for passengers travelling in lower classes who might get the opportunity to enjoy a more comfortable journey at no extra cost.
Together with new train projects, upgraded stations, improved catering services, and digital ticketing solutions, Indian Railways continues to evolve and strengthen its role as the backbone of India’s economy and mobility, providing millions with a modern, reliable travel experience every day.
