Cauvery water issue updates
As both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are fighting about the Cauvery water issue, both states observed statewide bandh. The conditions are yet to be set. Meanwhile, both states were heard before the Cauvery Water Committee that was appointed to solve the issue.
The Committee directed Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs water each day from September 21 to September 30. Both states did not reach a mutual agreement on the quantity of water to be released even after a long discussion for the entire day.
Shashi Shekhar, Union Water Resources Secretary and Chairman of the committee directed to release 3000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu from tomorrow onwards. But neither Karnataka nor Tamil Nadu agreed with this order.
Earlier, Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs per day for 10 days which was later revised to 12,000 cusecs per day. But, both the verdicts led to a lot of violence.
Karnataka repeatedly emphasized that due to present conditions of severe water shortage, it could not release more water. The state also cited that severe drought conditions are prevalent in the state due to failure of monsoons for six consecutive years. Hence, release of water is not possible to Tamil Nadu.
Now, the Cauvery Water Committee ordered Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs water per day which was also declined by it. Even Tamil Nadu did not accept it.
Shekhar, the chairman of the Committee told media that even though both the states did not agree to the verdict of the Committee, they can accept it before the court today when it comes to the Apex Court. He added that they can challenge it as well.
The Committee will meet in October to decide the future release of water based on the inflow of water into the reservoirs of Karnataka at that time.
