BSNL to make national roaming free
State-owned BSNL will provide its subscribers free incoming calls on roaming from June fifteen, telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated on Tuesday, even as it looks to compete more sharply with personal telecom operators. BSNL offers services to the entire country except Delhi and Mumbai where MTNL services are offered.
BSNL is set to give free national roaming from June fifteen. It’s already on the recovery path, Mr. Prasad said at a press meet marking one year of the Modi government.
The announcement comes before full mobile number portability (MNP), which is going to be effective July this year.
BSNL encompasses a mobile subscriber base of 7.72 crore at the end of March. Although there can be slight reduction in revenue on account of free incoming calls throughout roaming, BSNL stated that they tend to expect to achieve initial mover advantage and anticipate compensation for this amount by arresting churnout/porting out and acquiring new customers, BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava stated at the press meet.
However, free incoming calls are offered for one year. The Minister added that in 2004, BSNL created profits of Rs.10,000 crore, and its loss stood at Rs.7,500 crore in 2014 once the Modi government took over. MTNL, he said, was in profit zone until 2008, however is currently facing losses.
