New TRAI SIM validity rules: A boon for mobile users

Good news for dual SIM users as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) new rules offer significant relief for them. TRAI has introduced updated SIM validity rules for them.

These guidelines aim to reduce frequent recharges and ensure longer activation periods for SIM cards, benefiting customers of Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL.

Jio’s Extended Validity

Jio users can now enjoy a 90-day validity period without recharging. However, incoming call services during this time will depend on the last recharge plan.

If no recharge is made within 90 days, the SIM will be permanently disconnected and reissued to another user.

Airtel’s 90-Day Grace Period

Airtel has also extended its validity to 90 days. Beyond this, users have a 15-day grace period to recharge their SIM.

Failing to do so will result in the number being deactivated and reassigned to a new user.

Vi’s Affordable Reactivation Option

Vi customers can keep their SIMs active for 90 days without a recharge. To maintain their number beyond this period, users need to opt for a minimum recharge plan of ₹49.

BSNL Offers Maximum Flexibility

Government-owned BSNL stands out with the longest validity period. Its SIM cards remain active for up to 180 days without requiring a recharge. This feature makes it a preferred choice for users seeking minimal recharge frequency.

Extra Validity with Prepaid Balance

Users with ₹20 or more in their prepaid account can extend their SIM validity by an additional 30 days after inactivity.

The amount will be automatically deducted. If the balance is insufficient, the SIM will be deactivated and reallocated.

These new guidelines aim to simplify mobile usage and provide relief to customers managing secondary SIMs.

With longer validity periods, TRAI ensures users have fewer interruptions and more convenience.

This move reflects a consumer-centric approach, helping users avoid unnecessary expenses while staying connected.
