Aadhaar – Mobile number link not mandatory: SC
Earlier, Indian government made it mandatory to link Aadhaar card number with several specified things.
Linking Aadhaar card number with mobile phone is one among such. It was earlier stated that the linking is mandatory and it was directed by the Supreme Court as well.
But, yesterday, the Supreme Court clarified that it had not issued any such directive on the mandatory link of mobile phone number with Aadhaar card number.
A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court, stated as above while hearing a PIL which was filed against the order given by the government.
The bench is headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. The Apex Court said that even though there was no such direction issued by the Court, the government made it mandatory to link Aadhaar number with mobile number using a circular.
The Justices said that Aadhaar is used to verify the identity of the subscriber. So, telephone companies are demanding to provide Aadhaar card number for the purpose of identity.
How did the SC give such a statement? Is there a lack of coordination between the Court and government?
The clarification of the Court in this regard is questionable. The circular of the government had been passing stating that it is mandatory to link Aadhaar card number with mobile phone number.
And several users had done this out of fear of disconnection. But, at that time, the Court was silent. Now, after the entire process was over, the Court said that it is not mandatory.
The Court is justified to give such clarification. In the name of government’s order, everyone is collecting crucial information of consumers like biometrics.
Whether they can be retained safely or not is doubtful. If the data is misused, it will be a huge loss for the citizens as well as the government.
