Aadhaar is not a citizenship document: UIDAI
The UIDAI authorities said that Aadhaar card is not a citizenship document and it has nothing to with citizenship in response to the clarification for the notices sent to some people in Hyderabad.
Initially, 127 people in Hyderabad were sent notices and asked to appear before UIDAI deputy director for a personal hearing today for obtaining an Aadhaar number on false pretenses.
They have been given extra time to collect necessary documents and hence the UIDAI has postponed the hearing to May 2020.
In this context, several news items are spreading on media that UIDAI is issuing notices of inquiry to cancel citizenship.
Hence, the UIDAI has clarified that these reports were not correct and Aadhaar had nothing to do with citizenship as it is not a document of citizenship.
The authorities added that a person shall have to reside in India for 182 days before applying for the Aadhaar card as per the Aadhaar Act.
And Aadhaar number would not be issued to illegal immigrants as per the Supreme court directions to UIDAI.
UIDAI says that these 127 were illegal immigrants who had obtained Aadhaar number on false pretenses as per the reports of the State Police. Hence they are not qualified to obtain the Aadhaar card.
Such Aadhaar numbers obtained on false pretenses will have to be canceled as per the Aadhaar Act. That’s why the RO Hyderabad has sent notices to these people and asked them to prove their claims of obtaining an Aadhaar number on fake documents.
After thorough examination of their replies, if they are found to be guilty to get an Aadhaar number by submitting false documents, their Aadhaar numbers will be cancelled and other necessary legal actions will be taken against them.
