Paneer is a staple in many Indian dishes, but not every cube on your plate is authentic. Knowing the difference between real and artificial paneer can help you make better food choices.

Begin with the texture. Real paneer feels soft yet firm, with a slightly grainy consistency. In contrast, artificial paneer often feels rubbery and overly smooth.

When you chew it, the difference becomes clearer, as fake paneer tends to be elastic and chewy.

Next, try breaking it with your fingers. Genuine paneer crumbles easily without releasing much moisture.

However, artificial paneer may feel sticky or leave a residue. This usually happens due to the presence of starch or added fats.

Smell is another useful indicator. Fresh paneer carries a mild, milky aroma. On the other hand, fake paneer may smell sour, oily, or slightly chemical-like, especially after cooking. Therefore, always pay attention before taking a bite.

Taste also plays a key role. Real paneer has a subtle, creamy flavour that blends naturally with spices.

In comparison, artificial paneer often tastes bland or leaves an odd aftertaste. Sometimes, it may even feel greasy on the tongue.

Colour can offer visual clues as well. Authentic paneer appears off-white and natural. If it looks very bright white or unusually glossy, it could be processed or contain additives.

Observe how it behaves in dishes. Real paneer absorbs gravy well and remains soft. Meanwhile, artificial paneer often stays firm and does not soak in flavours, making it stand out in the dish.

You can also try simple tests at home. Place paneer in warm water; real paneer stays intact, while fake paneer may release oil. Additionally, an iodine test can reveal starch content if the colour turns blue.

Although these signs are helpful, some artificial versions closely mimic the real product. In such cases, only proper testing can confirm authenticity.
