India likely to have lesser power cuts
After witnessing a surge in output at Coal India, it seems that India is likely to experience lesser power cuts this summer. The surge has helped generators amass record stocks.
This helped Modi with a turnaround as he had to deal with a power crisis within months of becoming prime minister last May.
The reasons for this power surge which helped recover a six-year low hit in October are fast track mine approvals, tighter production oversight and more flexibility in coal sales.
This change in power situation has strengthened Modi’s pitch to voters as the state leader who gave the people round the clock power to Industrial Gujarat.
The government data indicates that there are 28 million tonnes of coal in power stations, an increase of 38 per cent from last year, as Modi prepares to mark his first year in the office to fulfil a poll promise to give power to all the 1.2 billion population of India by 2019.
K.Raja Gopal, the head of the thermal power business at construction, power and real estate giant Lanco Infratech has stated that the power situation in India is improving a lot.
He uses the example of Coal India output as an example to show that the situation is improving.
