PV Sindhu creates history
PV Sindhu has won her maiden World Badminton Championship title at Basel, Switzerland on Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
With this, she created history to become the first Indian to win World Badminton Championship.
Sindhu was once defeated by Okuhara in the final of the 2017 World Badminton Championships held in Glasgow.
Now, she took revenge for her defeat with 21-7, 21-7 and clinched the title along with the gold medal.
Sindhu took just 36 minutes to beat her opponent and the title clash remained one of the one-sided World Badminton Championship finals.
After winning the title, Sindhu thanked her coach Pullela Gopichand and her support staff. She dedicated this gold medal to her mother.
Her mother Vijaya was overjoyed with the victory of her daughter saying that they were eagerly waiting for this gold medal. She said that Sindhu achieved it with her hard work.
Sindhu defeated China’s world No.3 and All England Badminton champion Chen Yu Fei in her semifinals with a fight of 40 minutes.
Sindhu had won several medals including two consecutive silver medals, few bronze medals in addition to a silver medal at Rio Olympics. She also clinched a silver medal at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and silver medal at Asian Games at Jakarta.
This is the fifth World Championship medal of Sindhu. It is the second medal of the country in the badminton World Championships medal.
B Sai Praneet settled for a bronze medal after his defeat with Japan’s world No.1 Kento Momota in his semifinals.
Prime Minister congratulated PV Sindhu after her historic victory on Twitter saying that her success would inspire a generation of players. He applauded her as she made the country proud again.
Her compatriots Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth also praised her on Twitter.
