Teen skater shines at Asian Championship

While most teens juggle textbooks and screen time, 15-year-old Yenderu Sanchit Chowdary is gliding his way to international glory.

A Class 11 student, Sanchit, recently bagged gold at the 20th Asian Roller Skating Championship in South Korea, proving that passion, discipline, and focus can lead to top-tier success.

His win came in the Senior Show Group category, marking yet another milestone in a growing list of achievements. This wasn’t his first taste of global success.

At the 19th Asian Championship in China, he clinched gold and silver in the junior category. In 2023, he won gold in the junior men’s category at the Oceania and Pacific Cup in Australia.

Nationally, Sanchit has consistently dominated, securing medals at both the 61st and 62nd National Championships.

Sanchit’s skating journey began in 2017, inspired by his sister, Yenduru Akanksha, a skater herself.

Skating quickly became more than a hobby for him; it turned into a way to improve concentration and relieve stress. He said that other sports had not helped him focus the way skating did.

His skills were sharpened under Coach Anup Kumar Yama, an Arjuna Awardee, who guided him to perform at both national and international levels.

Sanchit said that skating was more difficult than people imagined, as it required balance, technique, and constant focus.

He added that it had been tough in the beginning, but his sister had continued to motivate him.

Reflecting on his recent win, Sanchit said that winning gold in South Korea felt surreal, but he believed it was just the beginning.

He shared that his focus was now on the World Championships and, eventually, the Olympics.

Managing both school and sport isn’t easy, but Sanchit approaches them with equal seriousness. He added with a smile that whether he was on skates or studying, he gave it his full attention.

With his skates firmly on the ground and his dreams set high, Sanchit Chowdary is a rising star India can be proud of.
