Tongue is one of the most sensitive muscles in the body. Even though it is the strongest muscle in the body, it can be hurt by ulcers that cause pain and discomfort. Tongue ulcers are small bumps bounded by red border with white center. These can be caused by various reasons including viral infections, lack of folic acid, hormonal imbalance, deficiency in vitamin B12, unhygienic dental conditions, deficiency in vitamin C etc. Here are certain natural and home remedies for tongue ulcers.

Coconut milk is an excellent natural remedies to treat tongue ulcers. Gargle with coconut milk that is extracted by grated coconut for thrice a day to treat tongue ulcers.

The mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda and one teaspoon of water can be applied directly on the sores to be cured. Even gargling with lukewarm water that has a spoon of baking soda can help in treating the condition. Baking soda can aid lowering the bacteria on the tongue.

Aloe vera is yet another effective natural remedy to cure tongue ulcers. Rinsing off with the juice of aloe vera juice eases the symptoms.


Chamomile tea is very effective in soothing sore tongue as it has anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used as a traditional medicines for several centuries due to its antibacterial properties.

Turmeric has excellent medicinal properties. You can directly apply the turmeric paste on your sore tongue or the mixture of honey and turmeric on it to cure tongue ulcers.

Mix 3 to 5 drops of clove oil to ½ teaspoon of olive oil. Apply the mixture of oils on the tongue ulcers directly with a cotton swab to get immediate relief from the pain. This is due to the numbing property of clove oil.

Gargling with plum juice can help in reliving pain from painful tongue ulcers. Or you can directly apply it on tongue sores.

Neem leaves are an effective natural remedy for treating tongue ulcers even though it is hard to bear the taste. Gargling with the lukewarm water that is boiled with neem leaves twice a day helps get relief from the pain and discomfort. But make sure that the leaves are cleaned properly while using.
