Novocarry: A revolutionary insulin-cooling carrier

Odisha-based innovator Komal Panda has been named the national winner of India for the James Dyson Award 2024, recognized for her innovative creation, Novocarry.

This portable cooling carrier is specifically designed to store insulin and other liquid medications at optimal temperatures.

The device is useful, especially for those travelling long distances or residing in areas with limited electricity.

For her groundbreaking invention, Komal will receive a prize of approximately ₹5 lakh (£5,000), further propelling her innovation into the spotlight.

The Novocarry stands out as a critical solution for diabetic patients who rely on the proper storage of insulin to maintain its effectiveness.

Komal’s design not only ensures that medications stay cool during extended travel, but it also serves as a portable power source.

The carrier’s battery doubles as a charging station, adding a layer of practicality for users on the go.

This makes Novocarry particularly valuable for individuals in remote or underdeveloped areas where electricity is not consistently available. Komal’s inspiration for this invention came from personal experience.

Her father struggled to keep his insulin cool due to the lack of refrigeration at his office, which posed a significant challenge to his health management.

Witnessing this daily struggle motivated Komal to create a solution that would give people like her father independence and peace of mind.

By offering a reliable way to maintain the potency of essential medications, Komal’s invention addresses a critical gap in healthcare technology.

The significance of Novocarry is further underscored by data from the World Health Organization, which highlights that nearly 20% of temperature-sensitive healthcare products are damaged during transportation due to inadequate cold storage.

Komal’s innovation directly tackles this issue, offering a portable solution that ensures vital medications, like insulin. It helps them remain effective during transportation, even in harsh conditions.

The device’s advanced cooling technology ensures that the right temperature is maintained, safeguarding medications for those who need them most.

The personnel at Dyson, expressed their admiration for the innovative entries from India this year, including Komal’s Novocarry.

They praised her invention for addressing a real-world problem in such an effective and practical way.

In addition to winning the national title, Komal’s innovation will now represent India in the international round of the James Dyson Award, competing against other innovative entries from around the world.

Komal’s success brings attention to the growing need for health-tech solutions that are not only innovative but also practical and affordable.

Two other inventions—Krea Limb and HydroChurn—were named first and second runners-up for India.

These top three entries will move on to the international round, where the final winner will be selected by Sir James Dyson himself.

With the recognition and validation that comes with this prestigious award, Komal hopes to continue improving healthcare access for individuals who depend on temperature-sensitive medications. She also wants to help them manage their health challenges more effectively.

Novocarry is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals across the globe, particularly those managing chronic illnesses like diabetes.
