Sisters earn lakhs by selling hemp products | Fusion - WeRIndia

Nowadays, back pain is commonly seen in many young people also. Shalini Bhattacharya also suffered from chronic back pain five years ago. It troubled her so much that she was not able to do simple tasks, like picking a small bag from the floor.

Shalini was working in Spain at that time. She underwent screening tests, and started taking painkillers. 

However, she could not get relief completely. She then researched the internet for alternative pain management therapies and found hemp as a useful substance.

Hemp has a component named CBD (cannabidiol). It is widely used in Ayurveda for relieving pain, muscle spasms, anxiety, depression etc. 

Shalini shared the information with her elder sister Jayanti Bhattacharya. The duo decided to launch a startup to offer products made of hemp. They founded India Hemp & Co in 2019.

The startup sells various products, like hemp hearts, seed trail mix, protein powder, and hemp oil. In addition, the startup also offers various other products like noodles, boondi, and vermicelli. 

All these are made of hemp. Apart from selling them online, these products are also available at physical stores.

The sisters’ duo call hemp a superfood as it can relieve many health ailments. Besides, it also protects the heart and brain.

Shalini and Jayanthi started their business with their own funds. Now, many investors are ready to invest in the startup.

The startup’s supply chain was disrupted during the early stage of the pandemic. But, the sisters started building their connections by talking to nutritionists, industry experts and many more. It resulted in strengthening their brand value during the pandemic.

As the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) allows the use of hemp seeds in food and beverages in limited quantity, the duo has used the opportunity. The startup generates revenue of ₹50 lakhs per annum.
