Manage sciatica pain with these tips

Sciatica pain affects the sciatica nerve. Bad posture and stress are the most common causes of sciatica pain. It is also caused due to excess pressure on the lumbar disc. There are many other reasons that cause sciatica pain. Spine-related infections, lack of nutrients and vitamins like D, deficiency in vitamin B12, pregnancy and inflammation are some of them.

Some people have a higher risk of developing sciatica than others. Certain factors increase the risk. These include obesity, smoking, genetics, sedentary lifestyle, depression, and certain occupations like truck driving, carpentry etc.

Tingling pain, weakness, and numbness in the leg and thigh are the common symptoms of sciatica. Some people may have pain or numbness in other body parts as well. Those affected severely are not able to move.

Here are some natural remedies and tips to manage sciatica pain:

  • A hot or cold compress helps reduce inflammation to some extent. Repeat it 4 to 5 times daily, as per the need.
  • Massage helps relieve the pain. You can use ginger essential oil or peppermint oil along with carrier oil like olive oil or almond oil for massaging the affected area. Do it twice daily for better results.
  • Turmeric has many benefits. The curcumin component in turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder with an adequate amount of sesame oil and make it paste. Massage the affected area with this paste gently. You can do it twice daily.
  • As vitamin D and B12 are crucial in the treatment of sciatica, add foods with more nutrients, like leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, pulses, milk etc., to your regular diet. You can also consume vitamin supplements to get relief faster. But, before taking vitamin supplements, consult a physician.
  • In addition, avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Stay active with light workouts. Also, avoid sitting for long hours. Take rest or walk at regular intervals.
  • Posture is one of the important things you must keep in mind. Try to maintain the right posture.
  • If you have severe pain, you can take painkillers for a few days. However, do not take them for a long time. In such cases, it is better to consult a doctor.
