Farmer builds an escalator for wife as a gesture of love

Love often reveals itself through small acts of care rather than grand gestures.

In a remarkable example from Andhra Pradesh, 65-year-old farmer Satti Siva Narayana Reddy built a homemade escalator to help his wife, Satyaveni, overcome the daily challenge of climbing stairs despite severe knee pain.

A resident of Arthamuru village in East Godavari district, Reddy designed and assembled the device without any formal engineering education.

The project took just 20 days and cost around ₹70,000. His inspiration came from watching his wife struggle to climb the 21 steps leading to the first floor of their home.

Reddy studied only up to Class V, yet his lifelong interest in machines and years of experience working with agricultural equipment helped him develop practical technical skills.

He owns tractors, operates a rice mill, and independently repairs farming machinery.

The idea for the escalator emerged when Satyaveni suggested that he create something similar to a lift for their house.

Motivated by her difficulties, Reddy spent months studying different mechanisms before purchasing a motor, wiring and other components. He eventually built a compact escalator powered by a 1.5 HP motor.

Designed with safety in mind, the system can carry up to 300 kilograms and includes automatic stop features.

It also functions during power cuts through a 1400 VA inverter. What began as a solution for his wife has now become useful for the entire family.

The innovation has drawn attention from people across the country, many of whom have contacted Reddy to learn about the design.

He believes that determination and practical thinking are often more important than formal qualifications when solving real-world problems.

Beyond his mechanical talents, Reddy is known locally for his charitable work and contributions to temple construction.

Reflecting on his achievement, he encourages young people to focus on innovation and self-belief.

For Reddy, the escalator is more than a machine. It is a symbol of care and companionship. As he puts it, one does not need to build a Taj Mahal to express love.

Sometimes, making everyday life easier for a loved one is the greatest expression of affection.
