Empathy in action: Susrusha for furry friends
In the heart of Cuttack, where the population of stray dogs and cats has become a growing concern, a compassionate woman is making a significant impact.
Saini Mishra, a 28-year-old former Infosys employee, has transformed her passion for animals into a haven for injured strays with the establishment of Susrusha For Furry Friends in CDA.
Amid the rising challenges posed by the increasing population of stray animals, Saini and her family have created a shelter where these voiceless beings find solace and care.
Having worked as a project finance manager at Infosys in Bengaluru, Saini discovered her love for rescuing and treating stray dogs during her voluntary work with an NGO in 2019.
Leaving her plush job in 2020 due to the pandemic, Saini redirected her energy towards aiding neglected and abused animals.
Returning to Cuttack, she transformed a piece of government land into a haven for distressed animals, obtaining permission from the Cuttack Municipal Corporation in October 2021.
Susrusha currently houses 56 dogs, including 11 foreign breeds abandoned by their owners, seven cats, and even a cow abandoned due to foot and mouth disease.
Despite facing monthly expenses of nearly ₹40,000 for food and treatment, Saini is undeterred.
Her father, brother, and supportive individuals contribute to covering the costs.
The shelter not only serves as a refuge but also functions as a rehabilitation centre.
After nursing the injured animals back to health, Saini ensures they are vaccinated for rabies, and male dogs undergo sterilization.
The animals are then returned to their original locations, unless they are handicapped or old, in which case they find a permanent home at Susrusha.
With a heartwarming dedication to her cause, Saini receives five to ten rescue calls daily.
Her tireless efforts highlight the significance of individual initiatives in addressing community challenges.
Susrusha For Furry Friends stands as a testament to the power of compassion, offering hope to the voiceless beings who share our world.
