New app to replace mAadhaar with smarter privacy controls
Digital identity tools continue to evolve as security and privacy become more important for everyday users.
In line with this shift, UIDAI is preparing to replace the mAadhaar app with a new Aadhaar app that offers stronger safeguards and a more user-friendly experience.
The upgraded application allows users to store and access Aadhaar credentials directly on their smartphones.
As a result, carrying a physical Aadhaar card may no longer be necessary in many situations.
Moreover, the app focuses on selective data sharing, enabling users to disclose only the information required for a specific purpose while keeping sensitive details private.
Getting started with the new Aadhaar app is a simple process. Users need to download the application from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
After granting essential permissions, they can begin registration by entering their Aadhaar number and accepting the terms and conditions. The system then verifies the user through SMS authentication.
Following this step, users complete face authentication using their phone camera and create a six-digit PIN for future logins.
The new platform introduces several improvements over its predecessor. Most importantly, it strengthens identity verification and enhances user privacy.
Users can choose which Aadhaar details to share and can conceal information such as their complete address when it is not required. In addition, the app supports biometric security features, including fingerprint and facial recognition locks, which add another layer of protection.
Another notable feature is the ability to store profiles of up to five family members on a single device.
Consequently, managing Aadhaar records for households becomes more convenient. The app also supports offline access, allowing users to retrieve important identity information even without an internet connection.
Furthermore, UIDAI has introduced secure QR-based Aadhaar sharing. This feature enables quick and safe verification at hotels, hospitals, government offices, and other locations.
Instead of revealing full Aadhaar details, users can share only the necessary information through a QR code.
Security remains at the heart of the new system. Therefore, authentication now goes beyond OTP verification and may include facial recognition or QR-based validation.
Through these measures, UIDAI aims to reduce misuse while offering a safer and more privacy-focused digital identity experience.
