Delhi govt renames Metro stations to honour national icons
Public places often reflect a city’s identity and cultural values.
Keeping this vision in mind, the Delhi government has approved the renaming of several metro stations, hospitals, and public landmarks across the capital.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the move aims to strengthen Delhi’s historical and social identity.
According to her, names linked to national leaders and local heritage help future generations stay connected with inspiring personalities and constitutional values.
One of the major changes includes renaming Rohini West Metro Station as Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station.
Additionally, Rohini East Metro Station will now be called Rohini Metro Station to make navigation easier for commuters.
The government also approved the renaming of Dwarka Metro Station as Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station.
Officials said the change would better represent the area’s local identity and improve geographical clarity for passengers.
Meanwhile, the under-construction sports complex in Begampur, Rohini, will now be known as Atal Khel Parisar.
The complex is being named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Furthermore, a statue of the late leader will be installed at the venue.
During the meeting, the government also cleared a proposal to name the upcoming hospital in Jwalapuri as Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital.
Another significant decision included renaming Britannia Chowk in Shakurpur as Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk.
The proposals received unanimous approval during a State Names Authority meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat.
Senior officials from the Urban Development Department, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and Delhi Development Authority attended the session.
Rekha Gupta described Delhi as more than just the country’s administrative capital. She said the city represents India’s cultural, social, and historical consciousness.
Therefore, honouring influential personalities through public institutions remains an important responsibility of the government.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s contribution to social justice and constitutional values.
She added that naming institutions after such leaders sends a strong message of equality, empowerment, and national unity.
Through these changes, the Delhi government hopes to blend urban development with cultural recognition while preserving public memory and heritage.
