Delhi pushes work-from-home to save fuel

Amid rising fuel concerns and pressure on foreign exchange reserves, the Delhi government has announced several measures to reduce fuel consumption across the capital.

The decisions follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for energy conservation and responsible spending during the ongoing global uncertainty.

The Delhi administration has directed government employees to work from home for two days every week.

Additionally, nearly half of all official meetings will now take place online to minimise unnecessary travel and lower fuel usage.

Authorities also plan to revise office timings in coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to ease peak-hour congestion and reduce traffic-related fuel waste.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also introduced visible changes to official transport practices. Her convoy has reportedly been reduced by almost 60 per cent and now includes only four vehicles.

Notably, two of these vehicles are electric, signalling a shift towards cleaner official mobility.

The government has also imposed restrictions on vehicle usage by ministers, MLAs, and other public representatives.

Under the revised guidelines, monthly petrol limits for officers have been reduced by 20 per cent from the earlier cap of 200 litres.

Officials believe these steps will encourage disciplined fuel consumption within government departments.

Furthermore, the Delhi government plans to observe a dedicated “Metro Day” to promote public transport usage.

Rekha Gupta has also encouraged citizens to adopt carpooling and participate in a weekly “No Car Day” initiative.

The administration hopes these measures will gradually reduce fuel demand while improving traffic conditions across the city.

In a post on X, Rekha Gupta said the government was fully aligned with the Prime Minister’s message on energy conservation.

She added that BJP MLAs, cabinet ministers, government officers, and departments would prioritise public transport and carpooling while limiting official vehicle use to essential requirements only.

The measures come at a time when India faces rising crude oil prices and increasing pressure on forex reserves due to global geopolitical tensions.

Consequently, several governments are now focusing on reducing fuel dependency through administrative reforms and public participation.
