Economic patriotism in a time of global crisis
Global conflicts often reshape economies far beyond the battlefield.
As rising tensions in the Middle East continue to disrupt oil supplies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indians to adopt more responsible consumption habits to protect the country’s economy and foreign exchange reserves.
Addressing concerns over soaring global fuel prices, the Prime Minister described the situation as a national challenge requiring collective public participation.
He stressed that patriotism today extends beyond borders and military sacrifice. Instead, he said citizens must contribute through conscious daily choices that strengthen the nation financially.
To reduce dependence on expensive fuel imports, the Prime Minister encouraged people to revive work-from-home practices introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He highlighted the benefits of online meetings and virtual systems, which helped reduce travel, fuel use and energy consumption earlier.
Additionally, he urged citizens to rely more on public transport, metro services and car-pooling whenever possible.
He also promoted greater use of electric vehicles and recommended shifting freight transportation from roads to railways.
According to him, reducing petrol and diesel consumption would help conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves.
The Prime Minister also appealed to citizens to reconsider discretionary spending during the ongoing global uncertainty.
In one of his strongest public appeals, he requested families to avoid purchasing gold for weddings for one year. He linked excessive gold imports directly to pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves.
Furthermore, he advised people to avoid unnecessary foreign travel, overseas weddings and expensive international vacations.
Instead, he encouraged domestic tourism and celebrations within the country to keep spending within the Indian economy.
Promoting self-reliance remained another major focus of the address. The Prime Minister urged consumers to prioritise Made-in-India products, including everyday items such as footwear, bags and accessories.
He also asked families to reduce edible oil consumption, stating that it would support both personal health and national economic stability.
Meanwhile, farmers were encouraged to adopt natural farming methods and reduce chemical usage by half.
The Prime Minister described farmers as key contributors to economic independence and environmental sustainability.
The PM emphasised that India’s strength lies in the small but meaningful efforts of its 1.4 billion citizens.
According to him, responsible choices made at home can collectively shield the economy during global uncertainty.
