TruthIn App decodes food labels for healthier choices
TruthIn, a pioneering app merging medicine and technology, is revolutionizing dietary choices by helping users understand what’s really in their food.
Founded by CEO Ravi Teja Putrevu, who was diagnosed with acromegaly in 2022, TruthIn arose from his frustration with complex and misleading food labels.
Realizing the need for transparency, Ravi collaborated with Dr Aman Basheer Sheikh, a dentist and health advocate, and his tech-savvy cousin, Raghav Putrevu, to develop a comprehensive solution.
In India, confusing labels often lead to uninformed choices.
Dr Aman, who noted clear labelling guidelines during his visits to countries like China, aimed to address this gap.
He says that many labels are misleading. In this context, he stated that many ingredients and additives are often hidden behind codes.
TruthIn’s mission is to clarify these complexities, making it easy for consumers to assess the health impact of food products.
TruthIn’s app evaluates products based on a unique algorithm that factors in nutritional content (45%), ingredient health impact (45%), and manufacturing processes (10%).
This process ensures consumers get accurate health ratings on a 1-5 scale, with 5 indicating the healthiest option.
The team of 35 members, including 15 nutritionists and doctors, gathers data from verified sources.
They even send photographers to stores to capture precise product information.
This thorough approach minimizes reliance on unreliable online databases.
The app’s barcode scanning feature allows users to instantly access detailed insights, like sodium, fat, and sugar content.
At the same time, the TruthIn Rating and Shopping Cart Insights feature helps users make mindful purchases.
With filters for allergens and dietary preferences, TruthIn caters to a wide range of health needs.
Currently, TruthIn’s user base ranges from 85,000 to 100,000 monthly, with popular health influencer Revant Himatsingka, aka Foodpharmer, as its brand ambassador.
The TruthIn is entirely self-funded. Its team is dedicated to empowering users with actionable dietary insights, fostering a new era of health-conscious shopping in India.
