In India, one of the most common problems is public urination.

Finding proper toilets is a hard task as well. It is one of the main factors for public urination.

In order to combat this problem, the government launched a toilet locator app.

The app helps one find the nearest toilets.

However, it is common knowledge for people that public toilets are maintained terribly.

So, the app not only tells you where the nearest toilets are but also the cleanest ones.

This means that the app does not only show you public toilets but also toilets in places like metro stations, malls, petrol pumps and hospitals etc.

 

This app was launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to statistics by PRI (a research organization), 70 percent of households in rural or urban India don’t have proper toilet systems.

The organization says that even today, around 60 percent of Indians still defecate in the open.

At present, the app only covers Delhi region and two cities in Madhya Pradesh.

According to an Ministry of Urban Development official, the app uses Google maps to find nearest toilets.

The toilets are shown in terms of distance and cleanliness.

The cleanliness of toilets is found by crowdsourcing. One can easily find if a toilet is clean or not in the app based on the rating of others.

Whenever someone uses a toilet, they can give a feedback regarding the toilet.

The facility to give a good or bad rating to a toilet is available on Google Maps itself.

As for building new toilets, the government said that they achieved 50% of the target in urban areas.

They are now focusing to make municipal wards open-defecation free instead of focusing on number of toilets built says Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu.
