NeeRain: Smart rainwater saver
Water scarcity remains a growing concern across India despite seasonal floods and heavy rainfall.
To address this contradiction, entrepreneur Amit Doshi developed NeeRain, a compact rooftop rainwater harvesting device that simplifies water conservation for households and businesses.
After spending 17 years in the waste management sector, Doshi shifted his focus to rainwater harvesting in 2017.
During his research, he discovered that conventional harvesting systems were often expensive, space-intensive, and difficult to maintain.
Many installed systems eventually became non-functional because homeowners struggled with upkeep costs and technical requirements.
To overcome these barriers, he launched NeeRain, a patented two-stage filtration system designed to be affordable, easy to install, and virtually maintenance-free.
The compact device fits between existing rooftop drainage pipes and filters rainwater before directing it to borewells or groundwater sources. Its first filter captures larger particles, while the second removes particles as small as five microns, ensuring cleaner water reaches the ground.
The innovation offers several practical benefits. It requires minimal plumbing work and can be installed within a few hours. Unlike traditional systems, it does not need large storage tanks or complex infrastructure.
The filters are removable and easy to clean, making maintenance simple enough for anyone to handle. The device is also cost-effective, priced between ₹3,950 and ₹6,500, compared to traditional systems that can cost ₹8,000 to ₹10,000.
NeeRain helps households recharge groundwater and reduce dependence on external water sources.
A roof area of 1,200 square feet can potentially harvest 60,000 to 1,00,000 litres of rainwater annually, depending on rainfall levels. The technology has been installed in more than 1,000 locations across India and has also reached users in North America.
However, the journey was not without challenges. Securing funds for production and marketing required significant investment and bank loans.
Creating awareness about rainwater conservation proved equally difficult, as many people remained hesitant to adopt new systems despite understanding the water crisis.
Even so, NeeRain has reportedly contributed to harvesting nearly ten crore litres of water, demonstrating how simple innovations can play a significant role in strengthening water security and promoting sustainable resource management.
