IIT-Madras revolutionizes recovery with 3D-printed face implants
In an innovative leap forward, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have developed groundbreaking 3D-printed face implants.
These implants are a beacon of hope for patients grappling with the severe aftermath of black fungus, especially those with compromised health like uncontrolled diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Black fungus is a condition that surged among COVID-19 survivors.
The technology stands out for its potential to significantly improve the quality of life for around 50 beneficiaries from economically weaker sections, without the burden of cost.
This medical advancement is the result of a collaboration between IIT Madras and ZorioX Innovation Labs, a startup spearheaded by dental surgeons.
The project harnessed metal 3D-printing technology to create custom-fit, medical-grade titanium implants, tailored to each patient’s unique facial structure.
This precision was achieved by converting MRI/CT data into a printable format. Thus, it ensures a perfect fit and restoration of facial features lost to mucormycosis.
Mucormycosis, colloquially known as black fungus, emerged as a formidable challenge in India, with approximately 60,000 cases reported post-pandemic.
The disease can lead to severe disfigurement and, in dire cases, hinder basic daily functions. The ‘#Rightt2Face’ campaign, launched by IIT Madras researchers, aims to identify and aid those unable to afford the costly imported implants traditionally used in such cases.
The initiative underscores a compassionate approach towards healthcare, making state-of-the-art treatments accessible to the needy.
Some professors at IIT Madras highlighted the institute’s commitment to utilizing its indigenously developed laser powder bed facility for this cause.
At the same time, the CEO of ZorioX Innovation Labs also emphasized the societal impact of the disease.
The collaboration aims not just to restore facial structures but also to bring back the smiles of those affected.
As this collaboration between academia and industry flourishes, the #Rightt2Face campaign sets a precedent for innovative, inclusive healthcare solutions.
Through their efforts, IIT Madras and ZorioX Innovation Labs exemplify how technology and compassion can come together to make significant differences in the lives of those in need.
