Dr A Muruganathan: Championing cancer care in Tamil Nadu
Driven by personal loss and a deep commitment to healthcare, Dr A Muruganathan has emerged as a pioneering figure in medical innovation and community health in Tamil Nadu.
Born into a middle-class family in Coimbatore in 1951, Muruganathan’s journey in medicine was sparked by his father’s untimely death and further fueled by his mother’s struggle with cancer.
This profound personal impact led him to vow to improve medical facilities in his region.
In 1998, Muruganathan’s quick action to save an injured man highlighted the acute need for accessible trauma care, inspiring him to establish a network of ambulances staffed with nurses and medical assistants every 25 km.
This initiative garnered widespread acclaim and was later adopted by both state and union governments, setting a new standard in emergency medical response.
However, his most significant endeavour began as a response to the lack of cancer care facilities in western Tamil Nadu.
After his mother’s painful ordeal with cancer and travelling long distances for treatment, Muruganathan was determined to establish a specialized cancer hospital in Tiruppur. His vision gained momentum after discussions with oncologist Dr Suresh at a medical camp in 2019.
Despite delays due to COVID-19, the project received a significant boost through the Namakku Naame self-sufficiency scheme, which promised substantial government support.
With a strategic plan in place, Muruganathan spearheaded the formation of the Rotary Public Welfare Trust, which successfully raised ₹30 crore through donations from various people. These include philanthropists, exporters, and local businesses.
The trust’s efforts, combined with ₹60 crore from government funds, culminated in the groundbreaking ceremony of the cancer facility, early this year.
The upcoming hospital, set to open by December 2024, promises state-of-the-art treatments. It will feature advanced equipment like a Linear Accelerator Machine for precise cancer therapy.
Spanning 50,000 square feet with 150 beds, it aims to be a beacon of hope and healing, providing comprehensive care under one roof.
Muruganathan’s dedication has not only revolutionized emergency medical care but also set to transform cancer treatment in Tamil Nadu.
It demonstrates the power of resilience and community support in facing health crises.
