IIT Madras tops NIRF rankings yet again

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), has once again secured its place as the top institution in India, according to the latest National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings.

IIT Madras not only retained its number one position in the overall category but also continued its reign as the best engineering institution for the eighth consecutive year.

In the overall rankings, the IITs maintained their dominance, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, securing the second spot. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur followed in third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively.

IIT Kharagpur came in sixth, while AIIMS Delhi stood out as the only non-IIT in the top 10, claiming the seventh spot.

IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati occupied the eighth and ninth places, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi rounded out the top 10.

Last year’s rankings also saw IIT Madras at the top, scoring 86.69, with IISc Bangalore following closely with a score of 83.09.

The positions of IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kanpur remained consistent, as they again secured the same places in 2023.

AIIMS Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, and JNU also featured in the top 10, showcasing the continued dominance of IITs in India’s higher education landscape.

This year’s rankings marked the ninth edition of NIRF and introduced three new categories: open universities, skill universities, and state-funded government universities.

AICTE Chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe announced plans to introduce a sustainability rankings category starting next year, reflecting the evolving criteria and priorities in educational assessments.

Additionally, the evaluation criteria saw some changes this year. The faculty-to-student ratio in medical institutes was adjusted from 1:15 to 1:10. At the same time, it increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in state government universities.

These adjustments reflect the continuous efforts to enhance the quality and effectiveness of higher education in India.

The NIRF rankings serve as a vital benchmark for academic institutions, guiding students, educators, and policymakers in making informed decisions and fostering excellence in education.
