Kerala tops state food safety index 2024
India solidifies its role in the global economy. It ensures food safety is critical to protecting public health and maintaining consumer confidence.
In this context, Kerala has once again taken the top position in the State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2024, as announced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
This ranking evaluates states based on various parameters. These include human resources, compliance, food testing infrastructure, and others.
The SFSI is a dynamic benchmarking tool that assesses food safety performance across all states and union territories in India.
According to the FSSAI, the index objectively measures food safety standards nationwide.
For the second consecutive year, Kerala has claimed the top spot. The state first secured this position in 2023, following its second-place finish in 2022.
Kerala’s consistent leadership underscores its strong commitment to food safety practices and regulatory compliance.
In a notable shift, Tamil Nadu reclaimed the second position after falling to third place last year.
In 2022, Tamil Nadu had achieved the top rank, displacing Gujarat, which had held the leading position in previous years.
Jammu and Kashmir made a remarkable leap this year, securing the third spot in the SFSI 2024.
This accomplishment highlights significant progress in food safety measures within the union territory, particularly in enhancing human resources and consumer empowerment.
Gujarat, which once led the rankings in 2021, now holds the fourth spot. Union Health Minister J P Nadda announced this year’s rankings during the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024.
Nagaland has also made notable strides, securing the fifth position.
It received special recognition among northeastern states for its improvements in the food safety environment. Its ranking showcases progress in compliance and testing infrastructure compared to the previous year.
This year’s SFSI rankings serve as a testament to the continuous efforts being made across India to improve food safety standards and protect the health of its citizens.
