Empowered women of Uttarakhand turn pine needles into prosperity

In Uttarakhand, where women traditionally manage household and agricultural chores, a remarkable transformation is taking place.

Women from the small villages of Asgoli and Jhuria in Dwarahat are now exemplifying economic empowerment.

They are changing the perception of pine needles, once seen as a curse, by creating beautiful and marketable products.

Under the banner of Maa Dunagiri Pirul Group, these women, organized in Self-Help Groups, are making a significant impact. Initially, these women learned to make these items for home decoration and personal use.

However, their dedication and hard work led to a rising market demand for their pine needle creations. This success spurred the formal establishment of the Maa Dunagiri Pirul Group as a business venture.

They produce a variety of products based on demand. These include hot cases, flower pots, plates, baskets, rakhis, and many more, all made from pine needles and starting at just ₹200.

Additionally, the women are skilled in Aipan, a traditional folk art, and weaving. Their products are sold in local markets and tourist areas like Kainchi Dham and Ranikhet.

They also set up stalls in places such as Almora, Dehradun etc., and offer handicraft training at various locations.

The group began with five women and has now grown to include about 10 to 12 members. Initially, these women were taunted for their efforts, considering the products a waste of time.

However, their success and recognition have encouraged more women to join the group. But, creating these products is not an easy task. It takes around two to three days. Initially, the lack of fair compensation was discouraging.

However, the pine needle products have given the village women a new identity. Women who were once confined to household chores are now engaging with people outside and making a name for themselves.

Also, this work highlighted the importance of self-employment in the hills. Farming, once sufficient to sustain families, has become challenging due to human-wildlife conflicts and other issues.

Promoting self-employment through handicrafts and other activities can provide work within the community, helping to prevent migration from the hills.

The women of Maa Dunagiri Pirul Group are not only enhancing their economic status but also setting a powerful example of empowerment and innovation.
