Mysuru tops the Swachh Survekshan
As per the Swachh Survekshan 2016, Mysuru is the cleanest city and topped in the list with 1749 points. Chandigarh, Tiruchirappalli, Delhi NDMC and Visakhapatnam occupied next four positions in the list.
Mysuru, the royal city of Bengaluru attained the first rank beating Chandigarh, the first planned city of India. Being a planned city, it is no surprise for Chandigarh to occupy the second position in the list. Rather, one may wonder about its position why the city did not stand in the first position of the list. Chandigarh has neither open drains nor narrow approach roads in the city. And almost all the population of Chandigarh switched in to a sewage network.
Then the question comes into mind as how Mysuru achieved this. It was all achieved by the public participation. Mysuru generates 0.45 kg of garbage for each person whereas Chandigarh only 0.35 kg. There are around 1.05 million people in Chandigarh. Its entire population produces 370 tonnes solid waste each day for which 4,085 sweepers are employed to collect. In other words, 2.65 sweepers are working per each kilometer of the road.
Mysuru on the other hand has 0.89 million people and generates 410 tonnes of solid waste which is handling by 1.37 sweepers per kilometer of the road. This indicates that the employees of the city are handling the solid waste more effectively. Furthermore, the collective efforts of the people of the city and government made this possible.
Mysuru got 200 out of 200 in waste management i.e. processing and disposal. In communication including information, education and behaviour change communication activity also the city achieved total score of 50 out of 50. Mysuru achieved 144 out of 150 in sanitation for providing public and community toilets, and 44 out of 50 in planning strategy for open defecation and free town and integrated solid waste management.
