Kolkata-born scientists discover dopamine can kill cancerous cells

Dopamine, the happy hormone can kill cancerous cells. This was revealed in a 14-year study conducted by Kolkata-born scientists. They are Partha Dasgupta, an emeritus professor with Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Institute and Sujit Basu, a professor at Wexner Medical Centre, Ohio State University. The discovery kept them on the threshold of one of the most noteworthy medical discoveries ever.

The scientists Dasgupta and Basu said that the research has been successful on mice in trials. If human trials succeed, then cancer cure will be substantially cheaper compared to course of chemo therapy that costs lakhs. Dopamine is available for Rs.25 only.

The amazing part of this discovery is that the cancer-killing property of dopamine was revealed accidentally just like penicillin, when both the scientists were performing random tests for analyzing the hormone.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter plays crucial role in regulating emotions. The duo states that it can cause cancerous cells to shrink and ultimately disappear by starving them of blood. They also found that dopamine performed very well on cancerous tumours, successfully counteracting vascular endothelial growth factor. However, the fluctuations of dopamine can lead to serious ailments like Parkinson’s disease. The efficiency of dopamine in the long-run needs to be known more.
