Tamil Nadu Bandh today

The dispute on Cauvery water is growing day by day. The issue seems to be burning between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Opposition leader M Karunanidhi called for a statewide bandh on September 16 i.e today. Various organizations also supported the call for bandh. The bandh has been called against the attackers who invoked violence and pro-Kannada activists that damage the property of several crores of rupees. Chennai members of DMDK will also hold a hunger strike at the headquarters of the party.

Yesterday all schools in the state declared a holiday. The General Secretary, Tamil Nadu schools association said that all private schools will be closed on Friday also. The schools will compensate the loss of academic hours on Saturday by conducting classes for extra working hours. The scheduled quarterly exams will be postponed to the next day. Tamil Nadu Petroleum Dealers’ Association stated that the petrol pumps will be closed till the evening today.

It seems that the effect of bandh will be severe. Vegetable market, fruit market, milk and grocery shops will be shut down too. Except Aavin Milk, state-owned milk, all other milk vendors are joining in the bandh. Lorries stop their services. Koyambedu market will be closed today as well.

Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders’ Association is also participating in the bandh due to which approximately 22 lakh shops will be closed. So people are advised to stock up groceries, especially milk.


Private bus services between both the states will be stopped. Train service will also be affected partially. Theatres cancel their movie shows till the evening.

But, certain services will remain open today. The state operated buses will run as usual. Metro rail services will also be functioning. Cabs and auto-rickshaws are likely to operate and their service will be affected partially. Hotels and restaurants in Chennai will remain open too. All bank services including public and private banks will not be affected as they remain open.
