Nation mourns the passing of Former PM Manmohan Singh

The former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The nation is in mourning following his passing.

The central government has declared a seven-day national mourning period to honour his memory.

During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country, and no official entertainment will be held.

Indian missions and High Commissions worldwide have also been instructed to lower their flags to half-mast.


Tributes and Mourning Across States

Chief Ministers from various states expressed their deep condolences. They called Singh a distinguished leader and a revered economist whose loss leaves a significant void in the country.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared a seven-day state mourning and announced Friday as a public holiday for schools, colleges, and government offices.

The Telangana government also followed suit, declaring a holiday for all educational institutions and government offices on Friday.

A week-long mourning period has been announced to pay homage to the former Prime Minister.

Congress Halts Official Events

The Congress party has suspended all official programmes for the next seven days as a mark of respect.

The party’s Foundation Day celebrations and the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Rally’ scheduled in Karnataka have been cancelled.

Congress leader KC Venugopal confirmed that party activities will resume on January 3, 2025.

Last Rites and Public Viewing

Manmohan Singh’s last rites will be conducted with full state honours in New Delhi on Saturday.

His mortal remains have been brought to his residence at 3, Motilal Nehru Marg.

The body will be placed for public viewing, allowing citizens to pay their last respects.

Manmohan Singh is widely regarded as the ‘architect of India’s economic reforms. His demise marks the end of an era.

The Cabinet will convene to pay homage, reflecting the nation’s collective sorrow.
