Putin’s India Visit to Focus on BRICS, Ukraine and Trade

India-Russia ties are set for fresh high-level discussions as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to visit New Delhi this week.

Putin will attend the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13. He will also hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 11.

The discussions are expected to cover trade, investment, global affairs and the Ukraine conflict.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the two leaders maintain close and pragmatic ties.

According to him, their meetings allow them to address sensitive global and bilateral issues openly. He added that the talks could create new opportunities for cooperation.

Peskov said Putin will brief Modi on developments in the Ukraine war. The leaders will also exchange views on major international issues.

Meanwhile, the economic agenda is expected to receive significant attention.

Russia has welcomed growing interest from Indian companies in its market. Peskov said businesses are exploring investment opportunities across several sectors.

Both countries are also seeking to expand their economic presence in each other’s markets.

Transportation projects will form another part of the bilateral discussions. The leaders are expected to review major international connectivity initiatives.

However, Peskov indicated that some cooperation issues require discreet discussions due to external pressures.

The two sides will also discuss the impact of instability in West Asia on the global economy.

Peskov warned that disruptions to energy supplies could have wider consequences. India and Russia are among the countries affected by these developments.

As BRICS chair, India will bring together leaders from member and partner countries. The summit will focus on strengthening cooperation and addressing shared global and regional concerns.

The upcoming meeting also highlights the continuing personal rapport between Modi and Putin.

Their recent interactions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit reflected their close relationship.

The latest visit is expected to reinforce that engagement while advancing key strategic and economic interests.
