India-France Ties Gain a New Cultural Landmark

Cultural exchanges often give strategic partnerships a deeper and more lasting meaning.

India and France are now strengthening that bond through a new temple in Paris.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India-France relations have entered a new phase of cooperation.

He made the remarks while virtually inaugurating the new BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Paris on Sunday.

According to Modi, both countries are building a Special Global Strategic Partnership with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Their cooperation now spans technology, artificial intelligence, defence, space and climate action. Moreover, 2026 is being observed as the India-France Year of Innovation.

The prime minister also highlighted the historical links between the two societies. Indian soldiers made sacrifices in France during wartime.

Their contribution, he said, remains part of France’s collective memory. Meanwhile, French scholars helped introduce Sanskrit and Indian philosophy to wider audiences.

Writers such as Romain Rolland also helped deepen mutual understanding. His works on Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda connected readers in both countries.

Similarly, the spiritual journey of Mirra Alfassa, known as ‘The Mother’, linked Paris with Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry.

ISKCON founder Srila Prabhupada’s visit to France added another chapter to these spiritual exchanges.

Yoga has since become another important bridge between the people of India and France. Its growing popularity is especially visible during International Yoga Day events.

The Paris temple brings these connections into a new era. Many of its stones were carved in India before being assembled in France.

Thus, the project combines traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern French engineering.

Modi described the temple as a symbol of cooperation and opportunity. He also said it could become a centre for community service alongside religious activities.

Furthermore, he expressed confidence that the temple would strengthen cultural ties across Europe. He said its values could benefit communities well beyond France.

The new landmark therefore represents more than a place of worship. It reflects a broader relationship built on history, innovation, spirituality and people-to-people connections.
