Aloe Ecell’s Aloe Vera Battery Innovation

An everyday battery is getting an unusual sustainability makeover as Indian cleantech startup Aloe Ecell explores how natural materials can reshape battery technology.

Founded in 2019, Aloe Ecell developed a battery that uses aloe vera as a bio-based component in its chemistry.

The innovation emerged from a simple question: could conventional single-use batteries be redesigned to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing everyday performance?

The idea, however, required more than simply adding aloe vera to a battery. The team had to develop and refine the chemistry, engineering and manufacturing processes needed to make the concept reliable at scale.


The resulting batteries are designed to deliver longer-lasting performance while maintaining a lower carbon footprint.

Aloe Ecell has also focused on making the technology affordable. Its batteries are priced at ₹18, positioning the sustainable alternative for everyday consumers rather than a niche premium market.

Building consumer confidence was another challenge. An aloe vera-based battery was unfamiliar to many buyers.

Therefore, the company relied on testing, certifications and pilot deployments to demonstrate its performance. Its products have received ISI and CE certifications, along with international design recognition.

The innovation extends beyond the battery’s useful life. Aloe Ecell is working toward a more circular approach to battery disposal.

One area being explored is converting used batteries into fertilizers by recovering minerals such as zinc. This could help reduce waste while returning useful materials to the ecosystem.

The company now manufactures around 400 batteries per minute and has expanded its products to more than 15,000 outlets across 18 states.

It has also raised ₹2.6 crore in seed funding to expand production, distribution and its supply chain.

Aloe Ecell is now exploring rechargeable zinc-iron batteries, indicating that its innovation strategy goes beyond disposable cells.

Rather than targeting electric vehicles or large-scale energy storage, the startup is focusing on the millions of small batteries used in household devices.

Its approach demonstrates how even a basic technology can be re-engineered using bio-based materials and circular thinking.
