Swacch Survekshan 2017

The Union Ministry of Urban Development declared the results of Swacch Survekshan 2017 yesterday.

It is a survey conducted by the Quality Council of India (QCI) as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The survey was conducted on the cleanliness of 500 cities which have a population of one lakh and above.

Six questions were set and asked in the Swacch Survekshan 2017 survey. More than 18 lakh answered and shared their perceptions on cleanliness and sanitations in towns and cities.

Indore in Madhya Pradesh stood in the first place of the survey followed by Bhopal. Visakhapatnam, Surat and Mysuru positioned in the next three places.


Visakhapatnam and Surat were in fifth and sixth places last year. The rank of Navi Mumbai and Vadodara improved compared to last year, as they were in 12th and 13th place. But, they are positioned in 8 and 10 place.

In 2014, the survey was conducted in 476 cities and towns. In 2016, the cities and capital cities with more than 73 million population were surveyed. This year, 434 AMRUT cities and towns were surveyed.

Mysuru which stood in the first place in 2014 and 2016, remained in the fifth place this time. Chandigarh that placed in second position last year, lost its position. It did not occupy a position in the top 10 places.

Interestingly, Tirupathi, the renowned pilgrimage destination in Andhra Pradesh stood in ninth place which stood in 137th place in 2014.

The survey also announced the list of the least clean cities. Out of 10 cities, 4 are in Uttar Pradesh, 2 in each Punjab and Bihar, 1 in Uttarrakhand and 1 in Maharashtra.

Gonda in Uttar Pradesh is the least clean city followed by Bhusawal of Maharashtra.

In 2014, the cities were in 151st and 267th respectively. But, this year they stood 434th and 432nd place.
