Osmos: A smart solution for worry-free plant care
For plant lovers, leaving home for a few days can be a stressful experience.
The excitement of a vacation is often shadowed by the worry of returning to wilted or dying plants.
Unlike pets, finding someone to care for houseplants isn’t a common practice.
Addressing this common concern, Osmos, a self-watering planter designed by NID graduate Gowtham Reddy, offers an elegant and practical solution.
Osmos is designed to keep plants hydrated for up to 15 days without any human intervention.
It combines a glass bowl and a terracotta pot to use natural materials for efficient self-watering.
The terracotta pot is known for its porous properties, which allow it to absorb and release water gradually.
When placed inside the water-filled glass bowl, the pot continuously draws moisture, keeping the soil evenly hydrated.
The planter utilises a 60:40 mix of soil and lightweight expanded clay, resulting in a medium that supports moisture retention while preventing waterlogging.
The bowl holds 1.5 litres of water, ensuring sustained hydration even during long periods of absence.
Unlike conventional watering methods that often lead to overwatering or dry spells, Osmos ensures plants receive only as much water as needed.
This not only promotes healthier root systems but also reduces water waste.
Importantly, the design also prevents mosquito breeding, a common problem with stagnant water in indoor planters.
Osmos supports popular indoor plants such as Aralia, Lucky Bamboo, and Sansevieria, and is priced affordably at around ₹500.
With over 300 units sold, it has proven to be both practical and appealing. It’s sleek, modern look complements home décor while providing reliable plant care.
Marketed under the brand Floraqua, Osmos is backed by students from IIM Ahmedabad and Ahmedabad University.
The innovation also earned recognition at the Lexus Design Awards under Best Student Project.
For busy individuals and frequent travellers, Osmos removes the stress of daily plant maintenance.
It encourages more people to bring greenery into their homes, confident that their plants will thrive, even when they’re away.
