Shocking, 35 Indian cities are the world’s most polluted
Pollution has been growing in the country for the past few years. There are many reasons for this, including vehicular emissions, open waste burning, construction activities, and subtle burning.
Shockingly, 35 Indian cities are on the list of 50 most polluted cities in the world. IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company prepared a World Air Quality Report after surveying pollution in around 6,500 cities across the globe. It published a list of the world’s topmost polluted cities based on that. All these polluted cities have PM 2.5 levels 10-15 times more than the approved limit.
The report reveals that many Indian cities are the most polluted in the world. Bhiwadi in Rajasthan is the world’s most polluted area as per the list. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad.
The report states that both Bhiwadi and Ghaziabad have PM2.5 levels, standing106 g/m3 and 102 g/m3. It is 20 times more than the approved limit. Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh stands in 16th place on the list of 50 most polluted cities. Among those 35 world’s most polluted cities, 14 are in Uttar Pradesh. These include Agra, Amroha, Jaunpur, Kanpur, Meerut, Noida and Greater Noida, and Varanasi.
New Delhi is in fourth place on the list. It is the world’s most polluted capital city. It is not the first time for the city to be on the list. It has been on the list of most polluted capital cities for the past four years.
The report reveals that any country across the globe could not manage the air quality standard prescribed by the World Health Organization. If improved air quality is maintained, it can add up to 10 years to people’s lives.
The study says that vehicular emissions, industrial waste, combustion of fossil fuels, power generation, construction related activities and crop and waste burning contribute to air pollution in India.
