Narendra Modi launches Saurashtra Narmada Avataran

The first phase of Saurashtra Narmada Avataran has been launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for irrigation (SAUNI) project at Sanosara village near Dhroll in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. Due to this new project, 10 dams and reservoirs of Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi will get good amount of water from Narmada River.

The project is worth Rs. 12,000 crore. The Saurashtra region is facing a harsh shortage of water for irrigation and other domestic purposes.

Modi announced this project in 2012 when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. The current Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani, said that this four-phased project is planned to be finished before 2019.

If the project is completed, more than four lakh hectares of land will be irrigated and the water crisis for the region would be solved. Suarashtra region has 11 districts and they are facing drought like situations. In the past two years, the region has been suffering with severe scarcity of rainfall.

Narendra Modi talked about how the project would be beneficial for many people and how he is looking forward to see it come to life. He tweeted that he was looking forward to being in Gujarat for the launch of SAUNI Yojana since a long time. He said that this project is beneficial for many people of Gujarat.

The PM who was supposed to travel by helicopter ride instead had to travel by road to Aji-3 dam to inaugurate the SAUNI project. This is because of the bad weather conditions at the area.

Raju Dhruv, BJP Saurashtra region spokesperson said that due to the active monsoon over Jamnagar for the past few days, the plan to travel by helicopter was dropped. The initial plan was for the PM to go the inauguration by helicopter from the airport but, for safety reasons, that plan was dropped.
