Kerala tops Healthy State Ranking

Do you know which state is the best in terms of health parameters? Which is the worst state that shows the least performance in the health index?

NITI Aayog, the government think tank released the report of Healthy State Ranking. According to the report, Kerala tops the list with the best performance. Andhra Pradesh stood in the second place followed by Maharashtra in third place.

Uttar Pradesh showed the least performance and stood in the last place of the list.

Certain parameters were used to measure the performance of healthy states.


The health index is a composite measure of both states and Union Territories. It is based on 23 health indicators that are given major weightage to the results.

This health index was prepared by NITI Aayog in association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The World Bank provided the technical assistance.

2015-16 is taken as the base year and the reference year is 2017-18. This is the second health index.

In other words, the health index of the second round for this period has been taken.

The performance of both larger and smaller states has been measured. In terms of incremental performances, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jharkhand were the top three whereas Chhattisgarh exhibited the least performance in the category of larger states.

The first round of the health index was released in February 2018 for the reference year 2015-16. The base year is 2014-15. This health index was measured in terms of the annual and incremental performances of states and UTs.

Kerala, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu ranked in the top three positions in terms of overall performance in the category of larger states. And Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttar Pradesh stood in the top three places in terms of annual incremental performance.

Mizoram stood in the first place followed by Manipur on overall performance in the smaller states category. In terms of annual incremental performance, Manipur and Goa topped.
