Kerala increases speeds limits for vehicles plying on highways

Motor vehicles in Kerala will soon be able to travel at higher speeds on national and state highways as the LDF government decided to revise the speed limits.

With the installation of artificial intelligence (AI) cameras, the government aims to ensure safer and more efficient transportation.

However, considering the high rate of road accidents involving two-wheelers, the maximum speed limit for these vehicles will be reduced from 70 kmph to 60 kmph.

During a high-level meeting led by State Transport Minister Antony Raju, it was decided to redefine the speed limits after the AI cameras become operational.

The current speed limits in the state were established back in 2014. The revised speed limits will take effect from July 1, providing motorists with adjusted guidelines for safe and lawful driving.

Under the new regulations, four-wheelers with a seating capacity of up to 9 people can travel at speeds of 110 kmph on six-lane national highways and 100 kmph on four-lane national highways.

Previously, the maximum speed limit for four-wheelers on four-lane national highways was 90 kmph. Meanwhile, the speed limits for three-wheelers and school buses will remain unchanged at 50 kmph.

The speed limits for other categories of vehicles have also been revised. Light, medium, and heavy vehicles with seating capacities above nine have seen an increase of 10 to 20 kmph on national highways, four-lane state roads, main district roads, and other roads.

Likewise, light, medium, and heavy goods vehicles have experienced speed limit adjustments of 5-10 kmph on national highways, four-lane state roads, and major district roads.

This decision aims to strike a balance between promoting smoother traffic flow and ensuring road safety.

By tailoring speed limits to specific vehicle types and road classifications, the government seeks to enhance overall transportation efficiency. At the same time, it also wishes to address the concerns associated with two-wheeler accidents.

As the AI cameras are implemented and the revised speed limits come into effect next month, Kerala’s road network is poised to offer improved conditions for motorists and commuters alike.
