First of India, Sanskrit only TV channel

The government has made plans in order to launch a frenzied Sanskrit television channel, presumptively the first ever within the country, by the Haridwar-based Uttarakhand Sanskrit Academy. It is a body beneath the jurisdiction of the government.

As per academy officers, a green signal was given about this regard. It was given by chief minister Harish Rawat. He also happens to be the chairman of the academy. The channel is anticipated to air a number of programmes which are based on Sanskrit literature. Along with that, the channel will also air news in Sanskrit.

On Tuesday, there is to be a meeting regarding the channel. This meeting will have more detailed plans on how the channel will be setup and the different aspects of its functioning. Over 100 Sanskrit students along with vice-chancellors of universities and principals of faculties are expected to attend the meeting.

Academy secretary Suresh Charan Bahuguna has stated that a proposal for the launch of the channel was sent to the government last year combined with a batch of different proposals for the year 2014-15.


The Sanskrit Academy was directed to organize an in depth project report for the channel. The academy followed directions from various departments of government to do its planning.
