Farmers call for nationwide protest on December 14
As farmers’ unions declined to participate in the sixth round of talks, the government cancelled them. The meeting of farmers’ delegation with Home Minister Amit Shah was not a success. While Shah said that the government would send a draft proposal on issues raised by the farmers, they insisted on revoking these laws.
After that, the farmers’ leaders said that they were rejecting the proposals of the government and decided to organize nationwide sit-in protest on December 14. They said that they would gherao district headquarters in all states on that day.
In addition to that, they would block all roads in the national capital if the government do not repeal these farm laws. They will organize protests at all plazas to stop the collection of toll tax on December 12.
The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) released a statement on this matter, informing the continuation of protests. Farmers are called upon to organize sit-in protest in all district and state headquarters with the support of other organizations.
Some opposition parties, including the Congress, demanded the repeal of new farm laws. They also submitted a memorandum to the President of India.
The Centre proposed to provide a written assurance on the continuation of the MSP and regime for procurement. It said that these laws intended providing the freedom to farmers to sell their crops at anywhere without troubles.
It assured to make necessary amendments on some issues raised by the farmers in the two new laws. However, it did not say anything about the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
The government also proposed to provide all clarifications about these laws. However, nothing was mentioned about the revocation of the laws, which is the main demand of the farmers.
