March for Rights: Farmers’ protest stirs Delhi
In an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has reached out to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
The association seeks urgent action against the Delhi Chalo protest.
Led by SCBA President Adish Aggarwala, the plea highlights concerns over the potential disruption of court proceedings due to the farmers’ march.
The protest, drawing participants from various states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, aims to voice farmers’ demands in the nation’s capital.
The Delhi Chalo movement has rallied over 200 farmers’ unions. Their demands are clear: a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops and a full debt waiver.
Besides, a pension scheme for farmers and the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations.
These issues, at the heart of the agricultural sector’s woes, have prompted a massive mobilization.
As the protest date of February 13 neared, Delhi’s security apparatus was significantly bolstered.
Barricades, internet suspensions, and Section 144’s imposition at the Uttar Pradesh border underline the authorities’ attempts to maintain order.
The extensive security measures, including multiple layers of barricades and traffic restrictions, have notably impacted daily commutes, affecting thousands.
The SCBA’s request to the Chief Justice is not just about ensuring the smooth functioning of the judiciary.
It also reflects a deeper concern for maintaining public order amidst significant political expressions.
The association’s appeal for no adverse orders, in case lawyers can’t attend due to the protest, underscores the anticipated impact of the Delhi Chalo march.
This movement is not just a demonstration of farmers’ grievances but a testament to the democratic process.
It showcases the citizens’ right to protest, albeit juxtaposed with the challenge of maintaining civic order and the judiciary’s operations.
